Mr. Shaw was a farmer killed by a mob of 40 people after being accused of attacking two white girls – an accusation he denied. He was taken from jail hours before his trial and shot and lynched. (A mob had previously attempted to lynch Shaw but was stopped a by a judge.)

Evan Lewis is a visionary and strategic leader committed to educational equality, social activism, and empowering marginalized communities. He has spent nearly two decades working at the forefront of the national movement to eradicate the educational achievement gap, provide high-quality educational opportunities to marginalized communities, and reframe the national dialogue concerning the fates and futures of communities of color. His work has been featured by national and international media outlets including CNN, The BBC, National Public Radio and PBS and was chronicled in the award- winning PBS documentary, All the Difference, which earned rave reviews nationally and was heralded by both the U.S. Department of Education and the White House under President Barack Obama. Evan is the great grandson of Lent Shaw, who was lynched in Georgia in 1936. He has worked diligently over the past few years to build a formal community of scholars, legal experts and activists committed to preserving the legacy of his great-grandfather and other lynching victims across the American South.
